Powerwolf — Call Of The Wild (Napalm)

When it comes to theatricality, only the likes of Ghost (opens in new tab)or Iron Maiden (opens in new tab) could ever hope to keep up with Germany’s heavy metal priests Powerwolf (opens in new tab). Call Of The Wild (opens in new tab) proved to be yet another triumphant conquest for the power metal champions, delivering massive choruses with a lupine grin. Hammer scribe Holly Wright testified that «If last year’s ‘best of’ proved that Powerwolf have no difficulty in penning catchy anthems like Werewolves Of Armenia and Amen & Attack, then Call Of The Wild positions them firmly on the same plinth as Euro headliners such as Sabaton (opens in new tab) and Ghost.»
Kvelertak – Splid
Origin: Stavanger, Norway
The Gist: Splid is the first Kvelertak studio album to feature singer Ivar Nikolaisen, who took over frontman duties in 2018. The Norwegian “black ‘n roll” band found new life with Nikolaisen following the departure of Erlend Hjelvik after 2016’s Nattesferd. “We felt like we still hadn’t made our best album,” guitarist Vidar Landa said. The band would pursue that goal with its fourth full-length, Splid — its debut on new label home Rise Records.
Why It Rules: After four years of relative silence, Kvelertak roared back. Where a general songwriting malaise and level of comfort brought down Nattesferd, the band sound rejuvenated and inspired on Splid. It’s catchier and more fun than its predecessor, packed with riffs and striking vocal performances from Nikolaisen. Kvelertak prove once again their mastery of combining extreme metal aesthetics with the musical structures of punk rock. —Jon Hadusek

Puscifer – Existential Reckoning
Origin: Los Angeles, California
The Gist: The fourth studio album from Puscifer sees the enigmatic vocalist Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle) joined once more by core members Mat Mitchell (guitar/production) and Carina Round (vocals/songwriting), among others. Existential Reckoning marked their first LP in five years. On the new effort, Puscifer offer up another go-round of electro-arty rock tunes, which deal with alien abduction and other mysterious topics.

Why It Rules: It’s a testament to Maynard’s talents that he does not spread himself too thin amongst his projects, as they’re always inspired affairs. The past two and a half years have been quite prolific for Keenan, as we’ve been treated to new albums from A Perfect Circle, Tool, and Puscifer — and Existential Reckoning is certainly another worthwhile effort from the acclaimed singer and his ever-revolving musical collaborators. His vocal harmonies with Carina Round are breathtaking at times, as Mat Mitchel’s instrumentation provides a new wave-inspired soundtrack. –Greg Prato

Mastodon — Hushed And Grim (Reprise)

While nobody has likely felt Mastodon (opens in new tab)have struggled to fit their immense creative energies into past albums, they certainly had no need to worry with the absolutely mammoth two-disk, 86-minute epic that was Hushed And Grim (opens in new tab). Beautiful, moving and built around catharsis, the album put the Atlantans’ creative ambitions out front-and-centre. A delighted Dom Lawson awarded the album 9/10, ruling «Hushed And Grim is 86 minutes long and, thankfully, never less than completely fascinating. It’s also a return to top form, their finest album since Crack The Skye (opens in new tab) and a rich and resonant salute to those we have lost.»
Uniform – Shame
Origin: New York, New York
The Gist: Uniform didn’t set out to record the soundtrack to a pandemic. But it’s not difficult to see the connections between singer Michael Berdan, when discussing the bruising “Life in Remission”, saying, “It’s about seeing those around me suffer and die and knowing all too well that it just as easily could have been me a million times over,” and the sight of refrigerated trucks serving as makeshift morgues for coronavirus victims. Shame is the dark, roiling expression of our collective fury and desperate confusion as we watched a disease ravage our entire way of life.
Why It Rules: Expanded just so with the addition of drummer Mike Sharp, Uniform found their missing limb, and with it, a strengthening and toning of their already muscular take on industrial/darkwave-inspired heavy rock. If the despair and fury coursing through every last moment of this noisy, abrasive assault isn’t touching a nerve deep within, the sheer volume and rumbling low end of these eight songs should be enough to wake you the f**k up to reality. –Robert Ham

Gojira — Fortitude (Roadrunner)

Even with the weight of expectation stacked against them, Gojira (opens in new tab) are indomitable. Crowned ‘band of the decade (opens in new tab)’ by Hammer earlier this year, the French prog-metal masters delivered on the hype by making sure Fortitude (opens in new tab)was absolutely jam-packed with anthems and memorable hooks; all the better to fill arenas with, after all. With a tour set to kick off in January (alongside Employed To Serve and Alien Weaponry), Gojira’s status as one of metal’s most exciting forces looks set to be recognised on a wider scale, elevating them to the massive crowds they so richly deserve.
Hammer reviewer Alec Chillingworth was in no doubt as to the significance of the band’s seventh effort, writing: «For album number seven, Magma’s experimentalism is channelled into what can only be described as The Fucking Hit Factory Fortitude is everything you wanted from Gojira and more: a breathtaking showcase of heaviness and dedication to the craft, teasing out tones, passages and emotional resonance other bands just can’t access.»
With Fortitude topping both the readers’ and critics’ poll, its fair to say Gojira have emerged from this year as a truly titanic force, ready to tackle 2022 into submission like the kaiju-sized beasts we knew they always were.
Architects — For Those Who Wish To Exist (Epitaph)

Nine albums in, Architects grasped a sense of enormity perfectly befitting a band whose eyes are firmly on arena headline spots, displaying all the credentials needed to make them the biggest UK metal sensation since Bring Me The Horizon (opens in new tab). Hammer scribe Stephen Hill summed the quintet’s stylistic shift towards more anthemic material best in his review, noting «when the band plunge themselves neck-deep into lighter terrain, they point towards a very exciting future. They’re too good a band for us to keep to ourselves forever, and with For Those That Wish To Exist (opens in new tab), a lot more people are going to discover just how great Architects are.»
Phoebe Bridgers – Punisher

Увидев Фиби во всех возможных вечерних шоу и даже на страницах Playboy, я был преисполнен гордости и тайной грусти: теперь мою музыкальную фаворитку знают все. Но в Твиттере мы видим прежнюю Фиби, бросающую острые и профессиональные шуточки в адрес своих коллег по Boygenius и Хэйли Уильямс, что не может не радовать. К сожалению, судьба Punisher напоминает историю с распиаренным альбомом Мицки, который даже не был лучшим в ее дискографии. Только в этом плане Бриджерс превзошла даже собственные ожидания и была номинирована на Грэмми аж в четырех номинациях. На каждом углу кричат, как она копирует Эллиотта Смита. Значит по определению Punisher должен быть шедевром. При этом слушатели едва ли могут идентифицировать, где там вообще Смит затесался.
На деле Punisher – ожидаемое и ощутимое улучшение по сравнению с дебютным Stranger in the Alps, но не более того. Заглавный трек оказался пустышкой и вызвал ответную волну негодования. Правда как всегда находится где-то посередине. Прелестная грусть продолжает быть визитной карточкой Бриджерс: «Chinese Satellite» и «Savior Complex» незаметно сыплют соль на сердечную рану в отличие от других душещипательных проектов, которые сразу достают острые предметы. Ну а «Kyoto» и «I Know the End» вообще стали главными культурными артефактами, без которых уже тяжело представить инди-музыку двадцатых.
Kelly Lee Owens – Inner Song
Я долго не мог врубиться в этот альбом. Не вдохновлял меня и кавер на «Arpeggi»: первая часть у Лианн Ла Хавас как-то посодержательнее будет. Но после пяти-шести прослушиваний остановить Inner Song уже невозможно. Если в 2018 году Николас Джаар записал хаус для тех, кто думал, что это только доктор, то Келли Ли Оуэнс показала простому люду, каким может быть техно.
Когда я слушаю «On», мне не нужны никакие обещанные Dear Tommy от Chromatics. Волнообразный «Re-Wild» звучит так, как будто сладкие голубки занимаются любовью в гондоле. А на «Wake-Up» Келли снова просит нас подумать о том, что нам на самом деле нужно в жизни. Монотонный Inner Song может и похож на саундтрек для рекламы стиральных машин, но он ужасно затягивает. Ну вот скажи кому, что поэтическая медитация «Corner of My Sky» длится семь минут – никто не поверит. А клип к нему о тостере, который смог, вообще шедеврален.
Ambar Lucid – Garden of Lucid
Может быть, это не самая сильная пластинка в жанре «нео-соул», но я его в целом не очень люблю. А этот магический сад не отпустил. Слушатель бессилен под медленный бит и завораживающий вокал, поющий на смеси английского и испанского на стартовом «Garden». Здесь животные заводят латиноамериканские хороводы вокруг лесной царицы неземной красоты. И вот она вся для вас… Или так кажется, пока она не сливается с природой на «Universe», и оставляет вас с улетучивающимися воспоминаниями в форме призраков «Fantasmas». Для фанатов Кали Учис, желающих более скромную подачу, явно подойдет самый танцевательный хит «Story to Tell». Garden of Lucid – редкий случай, когда сработала эстетическая подача и не остается ни единой претензии к лирике. Какими же талантливыми могут быть девятнадцатилетние музыканты…
Testament – Titans of Creation
Origin: Berkeley, California
The Gist: Few old-school thrash bands have been at it longer – and have admirably refused to deviate far from the stylistic script – as Testament, who returned this year with their 13th studio effort overall, Titans of Creation. Still led by singer Chuck Billy and guitarists Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick, the album is the group’s first in four years (2016’s Brotherhood of the Snake being its predecessor).
Why It Rules: You can probably use the following phrase to describe every single Testament album after the arrival of their debut in 1987: “the band offers up another serving of straight-ahead, hard-hitting metal.” And that’s not meant as a dig. They’re pros at their craft, and they continue to thrash mightily on the album opener “Children of the Next Level”, provide surprising boogie riffing with “Dream Deceiver” and a tune that shows the many facets of vocalist Chuck Billy, “Night of the Witch”. Three decades into their career, and Testament continue on the thrash path throughout Titans of Creation. —Greg Prato

Igorrr — Spirituality and Distortion

Oranssi Pazuzu – Mestarin Kynsi
Origin: Tampere, Finland
The Gist: Oranssi Pazuzu exploded into the metal spotlight in 2016 with their album Värähtelijä. The band seamlessly blended black metal, adventurous psychedelic rock, and shoegaze, proving they can create a unique masterclass atmosphere that can best be described as haunting. Oranssi Pazuzu seem to effortlessly possess some of metal’s most coveted traits: adventurous, sinister, eerie, and heavy while still being calculated and germane. After spending four years on their follow-up, Mestarin Kynsi, it’s safe to say this was one of underground metal’s most anticipated releases of the year.
Why it Rules: Värähtelijä always sounded like a black metal album with psychedelic elements. Mestarin Kynsi flipped that formula and became the most adventurous and winding album of the band’s career by honing in on expansive psych-rock song structures. The sprawling ambition and scope of these tracks is evident of a mature band with no fear of taking risks. Every track is a monumental psychedelic trip through dark progressive buildups with pummeling post-rock climaxes. Mestarin Kynsi is controlled chaos executed at the highest level. This release is going to divide the band’s fans when litigating Oranssi Pazuzu’s best album. Thankfully when picking between Värähtelijä and Mestarin Kynsi there is no wrong choice. —TJ Kliebhan

Odraza – Rzeczom
Origin: Kraków, małopolskie, Poland
The Gist: Polish duo Odraza explore the many post-modern pockets of black metal on Rzeczom. The genre has come so very far, endlessly branching into sub-categories of its own — a concept that appears to fascinate Odraza. Ironically, for a genre formed on the intolerance of a “true” sound and attitude — as dictated by Euronymous of Mayhem in the early days of the Norwegian circle — black metal has become arguably the most experimentally inclined styles of heavy metal. As Odraza illustrate with the excellent Rzeczom, even a traditionalist black metal template, if given some leeway, can hold plenty of surprises and still appease the purists.
Why It Rules: No matter what Odraza incorporate into their black metal assault, it’s executed flawlessly. The classic blast beat/tremolo picking serves as the basis for a variety of experiments as intense, extreme metal is juxtaposed against radio-ready segments, such as the nod-worthy break in “Ja nie stąd” and prog-jazz freak-outs — all in a measured hi-fi recording that’s mixed to emphasize the instrumental interplay. There’s a lot to discover here, making multiple listens rewarding. Odraza have created something that can easily appeal to fans of black metal (classic or modern), prog, and avant heavy music in general. —Jon Hadusek

The Strokes – The New Abnormal
От The Strokes ничего не ждали, но Джулиан Касабланкас снова показал всем, что его срок годности никак не истекает. Я очень поздно узнал о их первых альбомах и до сих пор не понимаю нью-йоркской каноничности Is This It?, но в 2020-м старые-добрые партии от Альберта Хаммонда-младшего звучат как минимум симпатично, как максимум… взросло. «The Adults Are Talking» напоминает нам о том, какие мы бессильные и маленькие, пищим и пиликаем, как древние муравьи. И дело не только во властях: по Земле уже давно ходят роботы, а сама планета находится на волоске от гибели. Проще всего разочароваться и жить по принципу YOLO. Но от новых The Strokes такого не дождешься. Когда даже такой необычный человек, как Джулиан Касабланкас, на которого легко наклеить ярлык пофигиста, призывает остановиться, задуматься, понюхать розы (если ковид не застал врасплох), стоит прислушаться.
Trivium — In The Court Of The Dragon (Roadrunner)

Not content with releasing one of 2020’s best metal albums in What The Dead Men Say (opens in new tab), Trivium (opens in new tab) opted to go for a victory lap by immediately following it up with their heaviest album in years on In The Court Of The Dragon (opens in new tab). The heavy metal affectations of Trivium’s last two records were dialled back so that the band’s metalcore/melodeath (opens in new tab) influences were again worn on their sleeves. Stephen Hill would accept no arguments in his review, assessing «Trivium aren’t ‘back’, this isn’t a ‘return to form’; it’s what they’ve been doing for more than half a decade and it’s hard to see exactly who can compete with them right now. In terms of a band playing contemporary, modern heavy metal, Trivium have been the best for some time. They still are, and In The Court Of The Dragon is a fucking awesome heavy metal album. Was it ever in doubt?»
Dehyper — Dying Youth
К группам, которые танцуют на стыке прогрессивного метала и веселого классического рок-н-ролла, прыгая туда-сюда в песнях, я испытываю особую слабость. В этом году я особенно активно заслушивал два таких альбома, но диск от Mother’s Cake уже попал в музыкальные открытия года, так что место в этом списке осталось для российско-британской группы Dehyper.
Их свежий диск Dying Youth — из тех редких пластинок, которые одинаково хорошо заходят как на фоне во время работы, так и на вдумчивом прослушивании. А еще записывался и сводился альбом в Британии на MiddleFarm Studios, а потому и звучит он «по-британски» — а там сейчас одна из лучших школ звукозаписи в тяжелой музыке.
Nation of Language – Introduction, Presence
Ностальгия – штука неоднозначная. Если альбом нравится, мы кричим «вау» и благодарим его за непродолжительное возвращение в прошлое. Если не нравится, то кричим на облака и возмущаемся, почему не придумали ничего нового. Я пока не слышал плохого слова в адрес еще одних дебютантов из списка – Nation of Language. Хотя это просто-напросто ранние «Депеши» образца Some Great Reward и Black Celebration с редкими луповыми вкраплениями LCD Soundsystem. «Indignities» еще более или менее отходит в сторону, но это все та же пьеса в двух действиях: нью-вейв и пост-панк. И все-таки она (пластинка) вертится, и все-таки это работает. Я давненько не слышал таких отчетливых синтезаторов и громких ваншотов. Разнообразия, конечно, тут не ожидается, и что будут делать ребята дальше – не ясно. Но пока Иэн Дивейни продолжает варьировать свой вокал от глубокого до воздушного «The Wall & I», мы у наших динамиков.
Code Orange — Underneath
Я говорю это постоянно, но повторю еще раз: Code Orange — это самая важная метал-группа на современной сцене. Они молоды и не избалованы славой. Они голодны и идейны. Еще вчера они были в глубоком андерграунде, а сегодня Code Orange — вторая после Slipknot группа на мейджор-лейбле Roadrunner Records.
Музыканты банды не боятся звучать тяжело, иногда настолько, что это режет слух — без индастриал-шумов, ломанной ритмики и резких пауз их музыку представить невозможно. Но не боятся они и своих источников вдохновения. Поэтому в их уникальном звуке проклевываются олдовые ню-метал и даже гранж-корни — знакомые, теплые, пробуждающие приятную ностальгию. На тему, почему Code Orange нужно слушать прямо сейчас, можно отдельный текст писать… что я и сделал. А Underneath — лучший метал-альбом 2020 года.
Jinjer — Wallflowers (Napalm)

Pandemic be damned, Jinjer will not be stopped. Wallflowers (opens in new tab)proved the Ukrainians were more than capable of vaulting obstacles, elevating their progressive and extreme elements simultaneously to craft their most ambitious album to date. In a glowing 9/10 review, Hammer writer Elliott Leaver declared «Wallflowers is, from the first note to the last, Jinjer’s finest work to date There haven’t been many releases in 2021 with the combined technicality and brutality that this offers across its 50 minutes, and there probably won’t be many more to come in the next few months, either. If you consider yourself a metalhead, this is essential listening.»
Vader – Solitude in Madness
Origin: Olsztyn, Poland
The Gist: The godfathers of Polish death metal never disappoint, and Vader’s Solitude in Madness is as consistent and satisfying as any of their records, albeit with maybe their fiercest production job yet. If you find comrades Behemoth too heavy on the arty aesthetics and too light on good ol’ fashioned brutality, Vader will scratch that itch. For those who’ve never tried Vader before, Solitude in Madness is a great place to start.

Why It Rules: Metal bands are often like military campaigns, requiring sophisticated interlocking maneuvers across multiple fronts to confuse, surprise, and elicit surrender from their listeners. Vader don’t do that. They just send in the bombers and arc-lite their listeners until everything’s blown to smithereens. Solitude in Madness strikes without mercy from go and doesn’t relent until it’s done just about a half-hour later. It’s pure mosh fuel with hooks for days and no distractions. I hope you like the smell of napalm in the morning. —Joseph Schafer

Oceans of Slumber — Oceans of Slumber
Oceans of Slumber — это прогрессив-группа из Хьюстона, основанная в 2011 году. Но состав, выпустивший новый альбом, к оригинальной банде имеет посредственное отношение. Половина группы сменилась в 2014 году, половина в 2019-м, а из основателей остался только барабанщик.
Однако именно свежий диск я считаю в дискографии Oceans of Slumber лучшим. Весь его звук закручен вокруг голоса вокалистки Камми Гилберт — тем альбом и прекрасен. Голос у Камми мощнейший, глубокий, способный выразить как ярость, так и полное умиротворение. При этом течение треков постоянно обманывает слух. Иногда радикально — прерывая киношную мелодику блэкерскими риффами и гроулом с бласт-битами, когда такого ты ну никак не ждешь. А потом возвращаясь к мелодике и уходя почти в джаз.
Poppy — I Disagree
Поппи — это очень милая девушка, которая несколько лет назад прославилась своими ироничными поп-песнями, фриковатыми образами и странными, иногда на грани крипоты, роликами на ютубе. Однако уже на второй ее альбом Am I a Girl? 2018 года просочилось два ню-метал-трека, и звучали они настолько круто, что многие фанаты (и я) начали писать в сети, что Поппи срочно нужно выпустить целый метал-альбом. Неизбежность этого события стала ясна с выходом трека Scary Mask в 2019-м — совместного с Fever 333.
Даже сама Поппи в интервью говорила, что ее метал-альбом I Disagree, вышедший в 2020 году, для нее будто дебютник. Треки на диске — это снова ироничные песенки, в которых тяжелые эпизоды перемешаны с нарочито милыми напевами и жутковатой лирикой. Но это не отменяет того факта, что I Disagree — это крепкий ню-метал, от которого можно кайфовать, даже не зная «лора» Поппи. Не зря же вышел диск под уважаемым метал-лейблом Sumerian. И заслуга в этом не столько Поппи, сколько ее боевого товарища Криса Греатти, записавшего для альбома почти все инструменты и экстрим вокал — да и музыку сочинял тоже он. Обязательно зацените его группу Blame Candy!
Dogleg – Melee
В этом году было особенно тяжело дебютантам. Подготовка выпуска первой пластинки на март 2020-го оказалась эквивалентом решения Ильи Варламова продать все свои доллары по 48 рублей. А тут еще современный эмо-коллектив, который точно не будет бить рекорды по продажам. Dogleg – настолько молодая группа, что солист Алекс Стойтсиадис благодарит пользователей RateYourMusic за то, что альбом набрал 3000 оценок. Если прошлогодний сюрприз PUP пытался остановить слушателя от перехода в нигилизм, то Melee – это веселый, милый, громкий альбом, не претендующий ни на что. Разве что… Было бы клево, если бы вы встали, потопали ножкой у нашей сцены, к вам бы присоединилась пара прохожих, а там уже скажется геометрическая прогрессия. К «Wartortle» нас уже будут десятки.
Iron Maiden — Senjutsu (Parlophone)

Continuing the ambitious path they blazed with 2015’s The Book Of Souls (opens in new tab), Iron Maiden continued to prove themselves as one of heavy metal’s most iconic bands when they returned with a second, somehow grander double-album in Senjutsu (opens in new tab). The album’s formidable 81-minute run-time flies by thanks to the band’s typical sense of bombast, peeling back some of the overt prog influences of its predecessor to gallop right into the fray. Hammer reviewer Joe Daly found himself electrified, writing «Senjutsu, while emerging as Iron Maiden’s most refined and compositionally mature outing yet, lacks nothing in terms of sonic force. If it’s metal haymakers ye seek, look no further.»
Killer Be Killed – Reluctant Hero

The Gist: The term “Supergroup” is thrown around quite a bit, but in the case of Killer Be Killed, this truly is a super group. Comprised of members Greg Puciato (ex-Dillinger Escape Plan), Max Cavalera (Soulfly, ex-Sepultura), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), and Ben Koller (Converge), Killer Be Killed returned six years after their self-titled debut with a sophomore offering this year, Reluctant Hero.

Why It Rules: It’s not common that you have a band comprised of four personalities as strong as Killer Be Killed (and also, three strong and distinguishable vocalists working together under the same banner), but Reluctant Hero shows a surprising chemistry between the noteworthy musicians. Case in point, the track “Dream Gone Bad”, packed with rage n’ riffs from beginning to end (the verses), but also, melodic morsels sprinkled throughout (the chorus). Killer Be Killed most certainly avoided the dreaded “sophomore jinx” with the arrival of Reluctant Hero. —Greg Prato

Samia – The Baby
Не вздыхайте. Знаю, что от таких альбомов уже ломятся инди-стеллажи. Но также знаю, что с такими проектами большую роль играет вкусовщина. Вам может не нравиться Snail Mail, но вы талдычите о Soccer Mommy на каждом углу. Вы спите под Фенн Лили и ревете под Tomberlin. Хотя по сути это одного поля ягоды. Вот мне понравился дебютный альбом Самии.
Это наивное творчество девушки, завтракающей в кофейне выше среднего класса и черкающей слова своей следующей песни в Молескине. Для кого-то это лишь заметки на полях, но по крайней мере они написаны красивым почерком и не каждый додумается до такого в чистовике, не у каждого выйдет такой магнит плейлистов, как «Big Wheel» или «Stellate». Да и в целом The Baby проходит без провалов, слушается залпом, не кажется самоповторяющимся и… Он приятный.
